14th of June – World Blood Donor Day

14.06.2011

Every second of every day, someone in the world needs a blood transfusion to survive!!! World Blood Donor Day is celebrated as a global celebration of the Gift of Blood given by voluntary, unpaid donors to save the lives of those in need. World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is 14th June – the birthday of Nobel Prize winner Karl Landsteiner, who discovered the ABO blood grouping system. Supported by the World Health Organization the day aims to raise awareness of the importance of regular voluntary blood donation.

The official host nation for this year’s WBDD celebrations will be Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the theme “More blood. More life”. This theme reinforces the urgent need for more people all over the world to become life-savers by volunteering to donate blood regularly. Countries worldwide will celebrate to thank and honor those who give blood of their own free will without receiving any form of cash or in-kind payment and will join the challenge to “Paint the world red”.

Bulgarian Organization of Voluntary Blood Donation would like to join Bulgaria to the celebrating of the WBDD and to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to each and every person that donates blood – saying a very big “THANK YOU” and to encourage current and potential donors to donate regularly on a voluntary unpaid basis.

Send us an e-mail to blood.donation.bg@gmail.com and we will give you the necessary information on how you can become a regular blood donor. You can also subscribe to receive news and information about blood donation campaigns and events.
