Bulgarian organization of voluntary blood donation congratulates you with the National holiday – the 3rd of March!

03.03.2011

The 3rd of March is the Day of Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule. On this date, in 1878, in the small town of San Stefano – today Yeşilköy neighborhood, a part of the  Bakırköy municipality, about 10 km. from the historical center of Istanbul, Turkey, a piece treaty between the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire was signed. It ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 – 1878 and settled, although not decisively, the creation of the Third Bulgarian State after almost five centuries of Ottoman rule in Bulgaria.

The 3rd of March was first celebrated as the Day of Liberation from the Ottoman rule in 1888. It was celebrated as a national holiday once – in 1987, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Liberation. 10 years later it became an official holiday and on the 5th of March 1990 was pronounced a national holiday.
